You Can't Stop the Beat! HAIRSPRAY Dances In the Rain at Jenny Wiley Theatre

Kurt Perry

From BroadwayWorld:

"After their opening night was rained out on Friday, July 20th, the diverse and youthful cast of Hairspray at The Jenny Wiley Theatre, an outdoor amphitheatre in Prestonsburg, Kentucky--population 3,255 -- celebrated their work and art by transforming a local pizzeria into a piano bar and joyfully singing through a concert of the show for an enthusiastic local crowd.

The cast performed the Act 1 finale with umbrellas, until the theatre lost power. That didn't stop the cast from taking Act 2 to a local lodge and performing its songs of togetherness to the local community by candlelight. In the days since, Hairspray, a musical whose central themes include integration, racial/gender equality, and body positivity, has continued to capture the local attention in Floyd County, a region best known for coal mining--and the cast will not let anything or anyone Stop The Beat!

Jessica Rebecca sings "I Know Where I've Been," Hairspray's eleven o'clock number about overcoming inequality and embracing a future of love, along with Robert Lee Poole III, Breia Kelley, Kynnedi Porter, Jeremiah Bryant, and Toni Lorene Baker.

Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote Mozart's talent or destroy his reputation. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God.

Reviews are in for White Plains Performing Arts Center's Hunchback of Notre Dame

James Zanelli and Company

James Zanelli and Company

“...the show is absolutely replete with beautiful visual and vocal movements, especially when the mammoth 32-person chorus is in full swing. Cleverly attired in monk robes and subtlety ensconced on the second story balcony of the huge and magisterial set, the chorus brought an enormous amount of depth and passion to the sound and the show itself. Whether accompanying the leads or delivering a solo monastic choral number, the chorus provided a gigantic wall of sound that spoke in a visceral manner of the power of the church in 15th century Europe.”

From the Academy Award-winning composing team of Alan Menken (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid) & Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) comes a lushly scored retelling of Victor Hugo’s (author of Les Miserables) epic story of love, acceptance, and what it means to be a hero. The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the Disney film’s Academy Award-nominated score.

The musical begins at the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be “Out There,” observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

A sweeping score (accompanied by a 15 piece orchestra & 30 person choir) and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic.
